Auberge d'Allemagne, Birgu

The Auberge d'Allemagne (( マルタ語:'Berġa ta' Alemanja')) was one of the eight auberges built in Birgu, Malta, for the langues of the knights of the Order of Saint John. It was a two-storey building and it was connected to Auberge d'Angleterre through the back part of the building. It housed the langue of Allemagne until the building of a new Auberge d'Allemagne in Valletta in 1575. After that it was used as a private house. The Auberge was heavily damaged during World War II but the inner rooms survived. Between 1961 and 1963 the site was rebuilt and the rooms which survived destruction in the war were integrated into the new buildings.
These few remains are still of historical significance to this day as they are the only remains of the German langue in Malta since the Valletta Auberge had been demolished in 1839. In fact, the remains were listed as a Grade 3 national monument on 22 December 2009,〔(Auberge d’Allemagne - Protecting the most significant buildings, monuments and features of Malta (17). ) Times of Malta, 17 November 2012. Retrieved 27 February 2014.〕 and they are also listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
